Il n'y aura donc plus de subventions à la hauteur de celles attribuées jusqu'alors. Il faut couper désormais le nœud gordien a-t-il dit. Cela n'est plus tenable, et sur ce point, la position de l'ensemble des élus toutes sensibilités politiques confondues est consensuelle...

Certains font encore mine de s'étonner, pourquoi donc au cœur de La Défense, au contact direct des sièges sociaux des plus grandes entreprises, la Fac Pasqua n'a-t-elle jamais réussi à obtenir leur soutien, même minimaliste?
La réponse est évidente: le risque d'image tout simplement.

Dans l'esprit de l'immense majorité des gens, et à juste titre : Association Léonard de Vinci = Charles Pasqua.
Aucune entreprise, aucune institution n'a jamais accepté d'associer son nom à celui de Charles Pasqua impliqué dans pléthore d'affaires de justice; cette alliance aurait été beaucoup trop sensible, trop sulfureuse, trop risquée. Et notamment, sur des questions d'argent, il ne fallait même pas y penser, et cela est normal.

L'ALV demeure une entité au fonctionnement trouble et irrationnel, nécessitant un maintien à bonne distance de sécurité: Association Léonard de Vinci = Risque d'image = Danger.

Malheureusement, la Fac Pasqua n'aura pas résisté au principe de réalité. Diriger et développer un établissement d'enseignement supérieur ne s'improvise pas, le niveau des étudiants est insuffisant, et leur coût prohibitif; et tout cela aux frais du contribuable des Hauts de Seine.
La triste vérité est que l'objectif réel de Charles Pasqua n'a jamais été de bâtir un établissement performant, mais plutôt de se servir de celui-ci comme territoire, objet de pouvoir et moyen de pression via les étudiants eux-mêmes et leurs familles.
C'est une minorité de privilégiés qui aura profité des incroyables rémunérations et indemnités de départ rendues possibles par les subventions du CG92, avec la bénédiction de Charles Pasqua, persuadé d'avoir tous les droits dans sa logique clientéliste et clanique.

C'était une manière élégante d'éclairer celles et ceux qui avaient encore des doutes face à ce ravalement de façade, orchestré pour tenter de donner le change.
Patrick Devedjian insistera fortement sur le fait qu'il ne se sent aucun devoir moral envers la nouvelle direction, Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès malgré les efforts désespérés de Jean-André Lasserre, élu socialiste de Courbevoie, pour valoriser leur action. Cela ne pouvait pas être plus clair.

La dure réalité sur l'ALV est très perturbante
Pourquoi Patrick Devedjian insiste-t-il tant sur les conditions de la nomination de Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès, et sur cette notion de devoir moral qui ne l'engage pas face à ces "nouveaux" dirigeants venus d'ailleurs?
Parce qu'en réalité, Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès ont été recrutés par Charles Pasqua lui-même, quelques temps avant son supposé départ en retraite fin 2012. Tout d'abord investis en tant que Directeur Général pour monsieur, et Directrice Générale adjointe pour madame, ils seront ensuite intronisés à la présidence de l'ALV à grand renfort de communiqués de presse.
Il fallait laisser croire aux salariés du Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci qu'une page se tournait et qu'ils allaient changer d'époque: Que nenni, il s'agissait bien d'une mise en scène!
Le cahier des charges qui leur a été présenté supposait certes de faire fonctionner l'établissement dans son ensemble avec plus de sérieux et de professionnalisme apparent, mais surtout en protégeant le système Pasqua et les membres du clan installés dans la place. La quête de subventions publiques allait se poursuivre de plus belle.
Les vieilles habitudes de Charles Pasqua ne se perdent pas, cynisme et provocation de la direction, et c'est la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase.
Le 21 juin, au moment même où se tenait la réunion publique du CG92, et durant les déclarations de Patrick Devedjian, Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès ont eu l'outrecuidance de publier publiquement la liste des nouveaux membres du Conseil d'Administration* de l'ALV avec comme président d'honneur, devinez qui?...

Et c'est lui qui réclame toujours, toujours et encore des subventions.
Quelle image donne-t-on? mais de qui se moque-t-on?
La ficelle était beaucoup trop grosse.
Un changement simulé dans la totale continuité du système
Ainsi, dans les faits rien n'a changé, Charles Pasqua est toujours là, il pilote toujours ses directeurs de façade Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès qui lui sont soumis corps et âme; quant à ses hommes de main, dont l'inénarrable Driss Aït-Youssef à la présidence de l'Institut Léonard de Vinci, ils œuvrent toujours en coulisses au service d'intérêts occultes. Alexandre Pasqua, le petit-fils, comme nous l'avons déjà annoncé, a quant à lui préféré rejoindre l'équipe dirigeante de SKEMA Business School, aux côtés d'Alice Guilhon.
Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès font partie du clan Pasqua. Ils ont fait preuve d'une grave irresponsabilité en acceptant de prendre le risque de s'entourer et de s'afficher aux côtés de telles personnalités dans leur mission critique qui devait sauvegarder la structure et les emplois. La réalité est qu'il n'y a jamais eu de changement d'époque. C'était un leurre.

Cela ne peut pas fonctionner, on ne peut reconduire en permanence une équipe qui perd. Car c'est bien d'une équipe incompétente dont il s'agit.
Celle-ci est déjà à l'origine de près de 600M€ de pertes financières.
Il faut arrêter et en sortir, enfin et vite!
Au mépris de toute morale, nous ne le redirons jamais assez, la présence arrogante et illégitime de Driss Aït-Youssef à la présidence de l'ILV et aux côtés de Pascal Brouaye et de Nelly Rouyrès est la preuve insupportable de ces dérives inacceptables. Cet homme de main de Charles Pasqua au passé sulfureux et au parcours académique ultra-light, ne fait que confirmer la vieille tradition de népotisme et de clanisme au Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci.
Tout cela se sait, et choque profondément beaucoup de gens, y compris les sympathisants historiques. Plusieurs personnalités démissionnaires de l'ALV ces derniers mois ne le supportaient plus.
Les conséquences de cette irresponsabilité et de cette incurie sont tragiques…
Le 26 juin dernier, suite aux déclarations de Patrick Devedjian dans l'enceinte du CG92, Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès ont réuni l'ensemble du personnel pour lui faire part sans tarder du point de vue de la direction et des premières décisions. Les salariés du Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci ont appris médusés qu'une sombre période de grande incertitude s'annonçait, qu'une "restructuration significative" allait être menée, ils étaient pourtant tous confiants jusqu'alors; ils pensaient recevoir de bonnes nouvelles.
De manière très claire, cela signifie que de nombreux licenciements vont devenir effectifs dès les prochaines semaines. Les syndicats bien naïfs et peu actifs ces derniers mois, commencent seulement à prendre la mesure de la situation.

Mais ce seront les autres, toujours les autres qui paieront. Les personnes qui ont eu le tort de faire confiance, de croire les boniments des dirigeants de l'ALV. Ils vont devoir maintenant rejoindre les cohortes de demandeurs d'emploi en pleine crise économique.
Des perspectives impossibles à définir pour l'ALV, son modèle n'est pas viable, il ne l'a jamais été
L'équation est pourtant d'une grande simplicité: Comment obtenir les financements de partenaires soucieux de leur réputation, et surtout du bon usage de leurs apports et investissements éventuels, comment assurer la pérennité des écoles dans le contexte que l'on sait, comment être tout simplement crédible? Mais il fallait un véritable projet, avoir une vision cohérente, et des dirigeants compétents. Dans la réalité, rien n'a jamais changé sur le fond?
Leur incompétence et leurs manigances sont à l'origine du déclin et de l'échec constaté du Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci. Un devoir de vérité s'impose. Le temps presse, les licenciements sont proches que ce soit à l'ALV ou à l'ILV.
Et pendant ce temps-là, Driss Aït-Youssef simule toujours des activités, alors que l'Institut Léonard de Vinci (ILV) s'apprête à sombrer

Driss Aït-Youssef, désigné fin 2011 contre toute logique par Charles Pasqua, son mentor et parrain, alors qu'il n'avait aucune légitimité à assumer cette fonction aura réussi à détruire l'édifice.
Il a brisé nette la dynamique de développement de cet organisme de formation prometteur, revitalisé par Amin Khiari quelques années auparavant. Et tout cela au moment où la demande importante du marché de la formation continue laissait poindre tous les espoirs.
L'Association Léonard de Vinci n'aura jamais eu autant besoin de ressources financières, que sa filiale lucrative était censée générer, car elle avait bien été créée à cette fin.
Là aussi, les décisions de Charles Pasqua se seront avérées d'une grande irresponsabilité, et avec de graves conséquences. C'est lui qui a nommé l'énergumène.
L'Institut Léonard de Vinci ne vaudra bientôt plus rien en termes d'image. Sa réputation annihilée par les errements de son directeur.

Driss Aït-Youssef connait tout cela par cœur, il veut en profiter quel qu'en soit le coût humain, quels que soient les ravages qu'il aura causés au Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci… L'ambition de l'électricien est sans limites, il est affamé. Les dégâts humains à venir ne le concernent pas. Il est toujours protégé par son parrain Charles Pasqua, président d'honneur de l'ALV, et par Pascal Brouaye et Nelly Rouyrès. Que cela est imprudent!
La réputation dans l'enseignement supérieur est le nerf de la guerre
En matière d'enseignement supérieur plus qu'ailleurs, la réputation est un actif extrêmement précieux à valoriser en permanence et à protéger par-dessus tout. Les dirigeants du PULDV et tout particulièrement son chef suprême Charles Pasqua ne l'auront jamais compris. Cela est dommage, et même tragique.
Pour eux seule la puissance et la soumission des hommes et des femmes importent , les étudiants et leurs familles ne fonctionnent pas ainsi heureusement. Car Il s'agit de leur avenir.

RépondreSupprimerLe Mondial 2014, qui a vu l'Allemagne s'imposer, a évidemment rebattu les cartes du classement mondial établi par la Fifa. Aux trois premières places, on retrouve le podium de la Coupe du monde, composé de l'Allemagne, de l'Argentine et des Pays-Bas.

Quant à l'équipe de France, elle réintègre le top 10 mondial, au bénéfice d'une compétition plutôt réussie au cours de laquelle elle s'est hissée jusqu'en quarts, battue par l'Allemagne (1-0). Un bond spectaculaire puisque les Bleus pointaient à la 17e place avant le début du tournoi au Brésil .

Oui, elle répond à un travail de longue haleine débuté dans les années 2 000, à une continuité, avec, chaque année une révolution dans le jeu, dans les mentalités. Les Allemands ne gagnaient plus même s’ils étaient souvent dans le dernier carré. Ils ont fait évoluer leur jeu. Sans oublier un vrai travail psychologique pendant leurs stages de préparation.
J’ai été impressionné par leur sérénité tout au long de l’épreuve. Pendant la demi-finale contre le Brésil, on a senti – et ils le sentaient aussi - qu’ils iraient au bout. Cette victoire est logique à la vue de leurs prestations durant ce Mondial.
Les observateurs parlent de la victoire du jeu, mot qui était jusque-là presque exclusivement réservé à l’Espagne. Des Allemands joueurs, c’est pas là la révolution ?
Oui et pourquoi ? Parce que les Allemands ont fait évoluer les morpho-types de leurs joueurs pour coller à l’évolution du jeu, du football. Ils se sont inspirés de plusieurs modèles. Comme la France, comme l’Espagne, ils ont pris des joueurs plus petits, plus mobiles, plus techniques, comme Lahm, Ozil, Gotze...
Ils sont devenus plus adroits dans les petits périmètres, plus vifs, plus intelligents dans le jeu interlignes et dans le jeu en profondeur, ils ont un jeu plus varié, plus simple. Ce ne sont plus les gabarits costauds « à l’allemande » que l’on connaissait avant. Et Low a pris les bons joueurs aussi.
Ils ont fait de tout ça un mix adapté aux vertus mentales allemandes. Puis ils ont appris de leurs défaites marquantes.
« La Bundesliga a tout pour plaire »Ce titre va donner un énorme coup de projecteur médiatique à la Bundesliga, hors de l’Allemagne bien sûr car là-bas le championnat fait recette.
C’est évident. Parce que l’équipe nationale type est composée de joueurs qui jouent en majorité en Allemagne, avec jusqu’à sept joueurs du Bayern Munich, puis de Dortmund. Donc le titre mondial va rejaillir sur le championnat. Et par ricochet sur son image à l’international.
Depuis leur coupe du monde 2006, les Allemands ont fait un énorme travail de marketing, de promotion, de valorisation de la Bundesliga à l’étranger, avec un championnat spectaculaire, avec des buts, des stades modernes et pleins à chaque journée. Le championnat est bien mis en images et comprend surtout des clubs performants en Ligue des Champions. Même si le Bayern a pris 4-0 cette année contre le Real Madrid, les 4 équipes de Bundesliga sont sorties des poules cette saison. L’année d’avant, en 2013, le Bayern et Dortmud jouaient la finale !

RépondreSupprimerChez nous, médiatiquement, la Bundesliga est peu exposée, sur Sport+ depuis que Canal+Sport est devenue 100% Premier League, ou sur beIN Sports. Ne vous parait-elle pas sous-estimée ? Pourquoi ?
Je pense tout simplement qu’il y a encore chez nous un frein historique et culturel qui bloque la popularité du foot allemand. Beaucoup en sont encore restés aux mauvais souvenirs de 1982 et 1986, au jeu haché, rugueux, dur et physique qui caractérisait l’Allemagne ces années-là et qui leur reste peut-être encore collé la peau.
Il faut tourner la page et comprendre qu’en Allemagne, on a pris conscience que le football était un jeu et un spectacle. Je pense qu’il y a une certaine méconnaissance de ce qu’est leur championnat aujourd’hui.
Avec près de 14 millions de téléspectateurs devant la finale sur TF1, les opinions devraient changer non ?

Il faudrait maintenant que le championnat soit un peu plus serré. Que Dortmund, Leverkusen et Shalke puissent tenir un peu plus longtemps la dragée haute face au Bayern. C’est possible cette saison avec un début très compliqué pour le Bayern et leurs champions du monde qui ne seront peut-être pas immédiatement opérationnels.
La saison prochaine, ce serait bien que de grosses affiches comme Bayern-Dortmund puissent être diffusées sur Canal+Sport ou Canal+, comme c’était le cas avant. Dimanche soir s’est achevée la 20e édition de la Coupe du monde. Un mois de compétition qui a vu l’Allemagne glaner sa quatrième étoile, Lionel Messi être élu meilleur joueur de la compétition envers et contre tous, le Brésil s’effondrer et… le mercato sommeiller gentiment. Logique, étant donné les consignes imposées aux joueurs y participant de mettre leur carrière en club de côté pour se consacrer (uniquement ?) aux ambitions de leur sélection respective. Mais maintenant que la fête est terminée au pays de la samba, le marché va-t-il reprendre ses droits ? Sur le plan européen, la question ne se pose même pas, l’annonce de l’arrivée de Luis Suarez à Barcelone pour 81 millions d’euros (selon la presse catalane) étant à elle seule le symbole que le Mondial se trouve déjà loin derrière nous. Mais en France, dans notre chère Ligue 1, à quoi faut-il s’attendre ?

PSG : Aurier arrive, puis des départs ?
Jusqu’à présent, autant être clair, il n’y a pas de quoi s’enthousiasmer. En dépensant 54 millions d’euros pour s’attacher les services de David Luiz, le Paris SG avait joliment anticipé le début des escarmouches au Brésil pour tirer une première cartouche. Mais depuis, les champions de France n’ont fait qu’alimenter la rubrique «rumeurs» et hormis la venue du Toulousain Serge Aurier, qui ne semble plus être qu’une affaire d’heures, difficile d’extrapoler sur la suite du mercato parisien. Le dossier Angel Di Maria apparaît très compliqué et pour se conformer aux exigences du fair-play financier, les dirigeants qataris doivent également vendre. Du coup, une fois le latéral ivoirien recruté, il se pourrait que le PSG s’oriente davantage vers le sens des départs (Ezequiel Lavezzi ? Edinson Cavani ? Javier Pastore ? Christophe Jallet ?), avant de se montrer de nouveau actif.
Monaco : que faire de James Rodriguez ?
Du côté de Monaco, pour le moment, c’est le calme plat au niveau des arrivées. A part récupérer une multitude de joueurs prêtés la saison dernière et qui vont garnir le loft princier, le club asémiste n’a pas bougé un orteil. Et comme le PSG, difficile de savoir s’il le fera avant d’avoir dégraissé son effectif et, éventuellement, d’avoir vendu l’un de ses deux Colombiens, James Rodriguez ou Falcao. Si le premier rejoignait le Real Madrid pour la coquette somme de 80 millions d’euros (voire plus), cela ouvrirait des perspectives forcément très intéressantes pour les dirigeants monégasques, qui rêvent de recruter au moins un nouveau joueur par ligne. Pour remplacer le meilleur buteur de la Coupe du monde, Monaco songerait à l’international français Antoine Griezmann ou à son homologue néerlandais Wesley Sneijder (et pourquoi pas les deux) tandis que l’attaquant transalpin Alessio Cerci viendrait renforcer le secteur offensif en cas d’envol d’Emmanuel Rivière. Au poste de gardien, le nom de Petr Cech, poussé vers la sortie à Chelsea par Courtois, continue également de circuler avec plus ou moins d’insistance.
Marseille dans l'attente
Pour le commun des mortels en Ligue 1, fin de Mondial ou pas, le mercato devrait continuer sur un mode mineur. Après avoir enfin réussi à prendre dans ses filets Romain Alessandrini pour 5 millions d’euros, à qui s’ajoute le jeune attaquant belge Michy Batshayi, Marseille doit désormais réglé le cas Mathieu Valbuena. Annoncé au Dynamo Moscou pour 7 millions d’euros, le Français s’interrogerait cependant sur l’intérêt, pour lui, d’un tel exil après un Mondial réussi. Steve Mandanda et Nicolas N’Koulou, eux, n’ont pas pu ou su profiter de la compétition brésilienne pour augmenter leur cote.

Avec l’édition 2014 de la Coupe du monde de football, cette année, les Brésiliens ont remplacé « le foot de rue par le foot de location » titrait le quotidien Libération du jeudi 10 juillet 2014 (À Rio de Janeiro, le foot de rue remplacé par le foot de location). Depuis le début de la Coupe du monde, les terrains de football à louer à Rio de Janeiro sont réservés chaque soir, et il est désormais difficile d’y avoir accès, notamment pour les jeunes des quartiers.
En période de Mondial, les terrains sont plus prisés que d’habitude parce que les gens veulent reproduire ce qu’ils voient à la télé (…) Au bureau, les journées sont longues. Mais on a besoin de jouer au foot, c’est très important pour notre équilibre », rapporte l’article de Libération.
À Rouen et au Havre, c’est différent : les Villes mettent gratuitement des terrains à disposition des footballers amateurs. Même sans être membre d’une association, il est possible de trouver des terrains en libre accès. Tour d’horizon des principaux lieux.

Engluée comme chaque année dans le feuilleton des décisions prises par la DNCG et des appels qu’elles suscitent, la Fédération Française de Football a tranché en ce qui concerne la composition définitive du CFA et de la répartition des équipes entre les quatre poules. Sans surprise, l’US Quevilly retrouvera au sein de la poule A la majeure partie des adversaires qu’elle avait croisés durant la saison 2013-2014.
Un derby seinomarin
Pour la deuxième saison d’affilée, l’US Quevilly affrontera le FC Dieppe, le seul autre représentant de Seine-Maritime en CFA. En 2013-2014, les protégés d’Emmanuel Da Costa avaient remporté leurs deux rencontres face aux Dieppois, à chaque fois sur le score de 2-0. Aucun relégué de National n’évoluera au sein de cette poule A, tandis que quatre promus seront là : Arras, Croix – dont le passage au Havre en novembre dernier pour un match de Coupe de France avait été remarqué – ainsi que deux adversaires au passé prestigieux : Calais et Sedan. Pour les Calaisiens, le match contre Quevilly sera un duel entre les deux derniers clubs amateurs qui ont réussi à accéder à la finale de la Coupe de France, tandis que Sedan, qui évoluait encore en Ligue 1 il y a huit saisons, se remet peu à peu d’un redressement judiciaire. Cette poule, où figureront trois réserves professionnelles (Lille, Lens et Paris-Saint-Germain), semble homogène et pourrait s’offrir à une équipe inattendue, comme l’était Chambly la saison précédente.
Huit recrues à l’USQ
Pour se renforcer après une saison 2013-2014 qui ne restera pas dans les annales (10e place en championnat, élimination précoce en Coupe de France), le club présidé par Michel Mallet a recruté huit joueurs. Parmi ceux-ci, l’on notera le retour à Quevilly de l’attaquant Joris Colinet, natif de Mont-Saint-Aignan et pilier du club lors de ses épopées en Coupe de France en 2010 et 2012. Dans ce secteur, qui voit Quentin Barcelo (Evry) et Christopher Mayulu (Les Herbiers) quitter l’USQ, les troupes d’Emmanuel Da Costa accueillent également Adama Sarr (Ivry), Jonathan Mendes (Beauvais) et Matthieu Geran (Lens), auteur du second but lors de la victoire de la réserve nordiste au Stade
Six matches amicaux avant la repriseÀ ce moment-là, les contours de l’ossature quevillaise devraient se dessiner avant d’entamer une saison qui prendra fin le 23 mai 2015.

A passenger who claimed he had a bomb, spat and threatened to kill flight attendants and open an aircraft door on a British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles was arrested by the FBI on suspicion of interfering with a flight crew, according to a federal criminal complaint released Wednesday.

Kevin Lee Mosele, 20, of Hawaii, made an initial appearance in federal court in Los Angeles Tuesday and was freed on $10,000 bond, according to federal authorities. If convicted on the single count, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
Mosele could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Los Angeles-bound British Airlines flight 283 Monday was two hours out of London when a flight attended contacted the captain and said there was an "abusive and disruptive passenger" that was "swearing and screaming," the 11-page criminal complaint said. The captain, Sean Dewbury, told Mosele he would divert the flight and "drop you off in Iceland" if his behavior continued. A short time later, he was restrained with metal handcuffs and placed in a rear seat.

For the next eight hours, the captain told authorities Mosele was "struggling in restraints, screaming and spitting," the federal complaint alleges. At one point federal authorities said Mosele began to mock the captain by saying, "Ooo, El Capitan, can I pretend to be a stewardess?" and dared him to land the plane saying, "You won't land for just one person."
In all, the captain said he spent 2 hours of the flight dealing with the allegedly unruly man, the complaint said. A flight attendant discovered two small wine bottles and two small whisky bottles in Mosele's seating area that were not sold on the flight. They believed he brought the liquor on the flight.
Mosele allegedly said, "I am going to set off a bomb" and "I am going to open this door," and told a flight attendant, "I am going to [expletive] kill you" as many as seven times. He also allegedly "spit in the face of a male flight attendant."

According to the complaint, Mosele told an FBI agent that he drank a couple of beers and a couple of wine beverages as well as purchasing a small bottle of white wine during a nine-hour layover at Heathrow International Airport. He also stated he didn't know if they would serve him alcohol because of his age. He joked with the flight attendants for about an hour-and-a-half, but a male flight attendant said he was "getting too aggressive" and admitted he might have scared the female flight attendants by walking around the rear galley area. He said that he became agitated after being restrained and just went "crazy," the complaint said. He also allegedly apologized to the agent.

A 4,000 year old necklace and two discs are now in The National Museum of Ireland after they were found in a dumpster.
The necklace, called a lunala, was worn by the early kings of Ireland. It is thought to date from between 2,300 and 1,800 BC.
It was first discovered in March 1945 in Coggalbeg, County Roscommon by farmer Hubert Lannon. He found it in a bog while he was cutting turf and kept it in his home.
Two years later he passed the necklace on to a local chemist Patrick Sheehan, in Strokestown, who kept the priceless piece of history in his shops' safe. There it remained until February 2009, when two thieves grabbed the safe during a burglary.
In March 2010, two men pleaded guilty for the burglary and were given three year suspended sentences. Working with the police, curators from the National Museum’s Irish Antiquities Division found out that the jewelry along with other documents and papers from the Sheehan’s safe had been left in a dumpster in Dublin.
By the time the police had received this information they literally had hours to locate the dumpster before the trash would be collected. The detectives who waded through the dumpster of trash to find the delicate jewelry, which weighs just 78 grams, were rewarded on the retrieval of the treasures.
The three pieces, the necklace and two discs, are thought to be one of the most important archaeological discoveries for many years. As the Museum director Pat Wallace said, “There is a whole lot of conjoined freaks of good luck to make it possible.”

Getting an Irish driver's license is a long, annoying process, and insulting too, if you're an experienced driver.
So you think you would like to move to Ireland. There is a lot to consider, but make sure you add to the list the fact that getting an Irish driver's license is a long, annoying process, and insulting too, if you're an experienced driver.
Ireland has reciprocity agreements with all EU members and a list of other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and South Africa. The Canadian province of Ontario was recently added to the list and rest of Canada is expected to follow shortly.
That means anyone moving from any of those countries to Ireland or from Ireland to any of those countries can swap their license. No problem.
What country is not on the list? Why it's the good ol US of A, of course.
As any American knows there is no such thing as an American or US license. Every state has its own laws and regulations regarding the licensing of drivers and issues its own licenses. They even have their own reciprocal agreements with foreign licensing bodies. Those vary from state to state, but no state has such an agreement with Ireland.
So, if you move to America from Ireland or vice versa you'll have to go through the same process as any new driver. Like I said, every state has its own rules, but if you're applying for a license in one of the 50 states you can count on a written test, a driving test and some form mandatory safe-driving course.

All of that would be aggravating enough, but if you're moving the other direction – eastwards – it's much more involved.
You have your usual written test to get the learner's permit, but then things get much trickier. You can't get a permit and go directly to the driving test. You first have to take 12 hours of lessons spread out over six months.
Oh, and those lessons are going to cost you $500 or more. (If that shocks you – and it would me – then the cost of your car insurance might well finish you off. Obviously, the rates will vary across companies and by individual circumstances so shop around, but be ready for nothing under €1,000 ($1,360) for a basic, annual policy.)
Only when you've completed all 12 hours of lessons can you apply to take the driving test.
So if you're moving to Ireland and you want to drive a car you should probably sell your first-born to cover the costs involved and take up some form of meditation so that you have the requisite patience to endure the six months (minimum) wait until you can get a full license and (possibly) legally drive in Ireland. (I say “possibly” because it's also possible that you can legally drive for the first 12 months on an International Driving Permit, but the Irish government is vague on that. They seem to like a bit of ambiguity in their rules of the road.)
Now, after waiting the six plus months and swallowing the massive costs involved (& I never mentioned the price of a car – better not to look right now) all of that is behind you and there's nothing more to worry about, right? Well, no. That used to be the case, but no longer.
The government has added a new twist recently. All new drivers – and that includes you with your 15 years of licensed driving in the state of Massachusetts or wherever – must now display big red “N” plates in the front and back windows of your car. That's “N” as in novice or newbie.
Maybe it's my age or my personality, but having to display a sign designed for 18-year-old drivers in my car windows would really gall me. I'd find it insulting, humiliating, infuriating. It might even be enough to discourage me moving to Ireland. It would be a big "N" for NO THANK YOU.

On May 7, the trial of Dachshund killer Dudley Ramsay came to a close. The 25-year-old Brooklyn man was found guilty of aggravated animal cruelty for the deadly beating of his 5-month-old puppy, Junior. The incident occurred in 2006.
An ironworker by trade, Ramsay was convicted of punching and repeatedly smashing the pup against the side of the tub. In spite of the dog’s obvious injuries, Ramsay then waited several hours before taking Junior to a veterinary hospital—ultimately resulting in the dog’s death. A necropsy showed extensive internal injuries, including six fractured ribs and damage to the liver and lungs. The alarmed veterinarian contacted the ASPCA for assistance.
After a thorough investigation, Ramsay was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Richard Ryan. Upon questioning, Ramsay admitted that he was only trying to "discipline" Junior for misbehaving during a bath. Further inquiry resulted in Ramsay confessing to killing his first Dachshund puppy, Viola, and burying her body in the backyard. Viola’s remains were unearthed, and a necropsy performed at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Hospital revealed that the small dog’s skull had been crushed.
“I think I need help with anger management because I killed my first dog, too,” Ramsey stated several hours after his arrest, according to Special Agent Ryan’s testimony in court.
The brutality of Ramsay's acts impelled Deputy Assistant District Attorney Carol Moran to push for the maximum sentence allowed by law—two years in jail. Despite her efforts, Ramsay was acquitted of killing Viola, but found guilty of felony animal cruelty in the death of Junior. He was sentenced to four months incarceration by Judge Michael Gary. The ruling also places Ramsay on five years probation, mandates anger management training and psychological counseling, and he is banned from owning an animal for eight years.
"While the severity of the crime certainly would have justified a stiffer sentence, we are pleased that this senseless violence resulted in a felony conviction and a term of incarceration," says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement.

People should treat animals as they do each other, the difference being that you use your intelligence to gague the animal's capacity to react, which, if you are a nutritive and protective person, as all animal owners MUST BE, usually results in a happy and productive relationship. Anger Management has become widespread today, with our stress-accumulative lifestyle and lack of respect for ourselves and each other. Maybe if the Catholics put Popeye for Pope things would improve. After all, as long as he has that can of spinach at his touch, anything goes!

In truth people should treat animals as they treat each other, but in reality, people are just as cruel to people!! Wife Beaters, Child Beaters, Husband Beaters! And there are many more categories, too many to list. So I think when people learn to treat Humans properly, maybe then they will also have compassion for Animals. But then again who knows if that will ever happen!!!

to the NSA’s IT Operations: Agility, Flexibility and Scalability

In the last year and a half, the National Security Agency (NSA) has tested and implemented an OpenStack Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud to streamline its IT development work – which had been hindered by an approval process that slowed progress. I covered the specifics of how the cloud was rolled out and tested, as well as more specifics on what the NSA wanted to accomplish, in this blog entry, Going Big with OpenStack at the National Security Agency.
The NSA has been running its OpenStack IaaS cloud in production for some time now, and according to Nathanael Burton, computer scientist with the NSA, the results have transformed the NSA’s IT systems operations. Burton spoke about the NSA’s OpenStack implementation at the OpenStack Summit in Portland last April.
When the cloud went live – without any launch announcement or advertising on Burton and his team’s part – there was viral growth. According to Burton, there were hundreds of users in the first few weeks that quickly grew to thousands. Production workloads appeared in the cloud, the team migrated from OpenStack Diablo to Folsom, and all of it was easily managed by a small team of 12-15 people.
More impressive, Burton told attendees, is that real change began to emerge in the NSA’s IT systems development patterns. Users started crowdsourcing and sharing ideas for application stacks so people didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. Also, the systems lifecycle process progressed from rigid development, testing and production in physically separate systems to a process that is much more fluid. As Burton explained at the summit, the cloud enables each individual to choose their own systems development model, including a DevOps approach. Users also are more easily able to share app configurations, and collaboration among different project teams and IT groups has escalated.
“So ultimately, this has led to changing the game,” said Burton. “There’s better agility, better flexibility, and better scalablity to create better mission systems. And ultimately, it has been a win-win.”
Along the way, Burton and his team have worked closely with the NSA’s IT security experts, and Burton said the consolidated central system the OpenStack IaaS cloud has enabled has actually increased security. But the NSA has added security mechanisms, including hardening the operating systems and building in SSL everywhere. The agency plans to release its security mechanisms for OpenStack to the community. In addition, the NSA is making plans to deliver the OpenStack system to the entire intelligence community, “so they can leverage the same IT efficiencies we have,” said Burton.

We’re excited to share the results of the first month of the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge: In June alone, the Challengers saved a total of 21,175 animals’ lives! Competing shelters achieved this by adopting out or reuniting pets with their guardians. June’s impressive total was a combined increase of 4,311 over lives saved by the shelters during June 2013.
The Challengers started off on the right foot after a successful Challenge Kick-off Week June 1-8, and kept the momentum going throughout the month.
We’d like to congratulate the following shelters for saving most additional cats and dogs by the end of the first month of the Challenge in their respective divisions:

In just one week, 50 competing shelters in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge kicked off the competition with a bang by adopting out more than 4,900 animals.
As the Challenge began on Sunday, June 1, all 50 shelters worked to host special adoption events throughout the week. From California to Maine, adopters visited local shelters to show their support for the Challenge and went home with furry best friends of all shapes and sizes.
But the excitement is just beginning! Now through the end of August, support your local Challenge shelter as the contestants compete to break their own adoption records and save the most animals over the same period in 2013.
You can also join in on the fun by submitting a photo of your rescued pet to the I Rescued My Pet Photo Contest with Rachael Ray. One lucky winner will receive a Rachael Ray prize pack.

ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge
After months of preparation and anticipation, it’s time for the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge to begin! During this exciting three-month competition, from June 1 to August 31, 50 shelters nationwide will compete to break their own adoption records and save the most animals over the same period in 2013. Winners and finalists will earn prize grants, ranging from $5,000 to $100,000, so they can save even more animals in the future.

Who doesn’t love the Fourth of July? It’s a weekend for block parties, barbeques, belly-flops in the pool and parades—all best when enjoyed with friends and family, and even better when you have the day off to celebrate with your pets! Have fun, but remember that certain traditional Independence Day activities might not be so fun, or so healthy, for the four-legged members of your household: yes, we’re talking about fireworks.
Fireworks are loud, and the crowds that go to see them can be scary, too. Animal shelters nationwide are flooded with runaway pets on the Fourth; studies show that nearly one in five lost pets went missing because they were fleeing the sound of fireworks or other loud noises. Losing a pet is not only heartbreaking, it’s also very dangerous for the animal, especially if he or she ends up roaming busy streets.
The best way to keep your pets safe is to make sure they don’t go missing in the first place: Please resist the urge to take your pets to go see fireworks. Instead, keep them safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home. Double check leashes and collars and make sure your pet’s ID tag is up to date. Be mindful when opening outside doors. And if the unthinkable does happen, the ASPCA’s new app is here to help: Utilizing the latest field research, this free tool provides users with an individual search plan based on their pet’s behavior and individual circumstances so they can search quickly and effectively to recover their lost pet.

Underhanded Ag-Gag & Other Farm Animal News for Late-March 2014
Chicken Scratch is an ASPCA Blog feature that highlights interesting news about farm animals and their welfare.
This might be a new low. Lawmakers in Kentucky got sneaky and added ag-gag language to a bill to ban gas chamber use at animal shelters—a bill that the ASPCA and other animal welfare groups had previously come out in support of. They’re trying to make it illegal to expose animal abuse on factory farms. The same thing is happening in Tennessee. Please take action if you live in TN or KY. Wherever you live, become a part of our Advocacy Brigade to stay updated.
With the help of our advocates and a multi-interest coalition, this year we’ve defeated ag-gag in New Hampshire and Indiana. Last year we defeated ag-gag bills in all 11 states that proposed them.
Finally, all 50 states will have felony-level penalties for animal cruelty now that South Dakota has passed Senate Bill 46—a huge milestone. But this and many other state laws exclude farm animals from protection. We will continue to work to close loopholes: All animal abuse should be taken seriously and punished appropriately.
The Food and Drug Administration says drug companies have agreed to comply with the agency’s recommendation to phase out antibiotics used to accelerate farm-animal growth. Unfortunately, the same drugs can just be relabeled and used to “prevent” the illnesses caused by inhumane, unsanitary conditions on factory farms. This won’t help animals or the growing number of children getting sick from antibiotic-resistant infections.
A Dutch advertising standards commission decided that McDonald’s in the Netherlands was wrong to say on its website that it does not use cheap, fast-growing broiler chickens, and forced the company to take down the language. The American Veterinary Medical Association is also discussing the health consequences of farm animals’ unprecedented weights, which include widespread lameness, chronic hunger and physical exhaustion.

You have heard of the pub with no beer, but how about the Minister for the Irish language who cannot speak Irish?
This is what happened after the ministerial reshuffle by Irish leader Enda Kenny when it was revealed his chosen Minister fort he Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Joe McHugh from Donegal, only had a very basic knowledge of the language.
The government quickly promised they would send him to basic language school to learn, which only earned them more derision.
Fianna Fáil member of parliament and former Gaeltacht (Irish speaking areas) Affairs minister Éamon Ó Cuív stated he was “shocked and disappointed” that the Irish leader had chosen someone who is not a fluent speaker.
“Having fluent Irish should be an absolute prerequisite for a Minister with responsibility for the language; without it they cannot adequately carry out their duties in Gaeltacht Affairs,” O Cuiv said.
He stated that it showed the Government’s “total disinterest” in the constitutional position of the language.
After Ó Cuív raised the issue in the parliament on Tuesday evening, Enda Kenny promised that McHugh will take a refresher course in the Irish language saying he was “rusty.”
A Government spokesperson said McHugh’s lack of Irish skills was “reflective of the fact that so few of our politicians speak Irish.”
However, critics pointed out that outgoing minister Dinny McGinley, a fluent speaker, was available.
The Irish language Commissioner Rónán Ó Domhnaill said it would be "much more preferable" if McHugh was a fluent Irish speaker.

NEW YORK - The United States returned to Mongolia more than 18 dinosaur skeletons and fossils stolen from the Gobi desert and smuggled abroad, saying they were enough to stock a museum.

The haul includes skeletons of two Tyrannosaurus bataars, a cousin of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex, and two Oviraptors, known at least apocryphally isabelle boissard
for eating other dinosaur eggs.
The repatriation ceremony was the culmination of a two-year effort to return numerous dinosaur fossils smuggled to the United States and other countries.
The ceremony took place more than a year after the United States handed back the first remains of a 70-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus skeleton to the isabelle boissard
Mongolian government.
The rest were handed over to US authorities isabelle boissard
by his British former business partner.
Prokopi, who had faced up to 17 years in jail and a $250,000 fine, isabelle boissard
was instead sentenced to three months on July 3 after pleading guilty and surrendering the skeletons.

TEL AVIV — Even as Israel and Hamas agreed to suspend hostilities briefly on Thursday at the request of the United Nations, a senior Israeli military official said that his government was increasingly likely to order a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip that it had hoped to avoid.
Though Israel initially set limited goals of halting the rocket assaults against it and degrading Hamas, the Islamist movement that dominates Gaza, the group’s tenacity and surprisingly deep arsenal have led to widespread calls to expand the mission. The military official said only “boots on the ground” could eradicate terrorism from Gaza and indicated that Israel was even considering a long-term reoccupation of the coastal territory.

Hours earlier, Israel called up 8,000 reservists in addition to the 42,000 troops already mobilized. With no progress reported from Cairo, where President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority had gone to discuss terms to end the fighting, Israel’s airstrikes intensified despite what the military official acknowledged were diminishing returns.
“Every day that passes makes the possibility more evident,” the military official said of a ground campaign. The official, who has been briefing Israeli ministers responsible for strategic decisions and spoke on the condition of anonymity under military protocol, said that his assessment was based on “the signals I get” and that the likelihood of an invasion was “very high.”
“We can hurt them very hard from the air but not get rid of them,” he told a handful of international journalists in a briefing at the military’s Tel Aviv headquarters. An Israeli takeover of Gaza would not be “a huge challenge,” he said, estimating that it would take “a matter of days or weeks.” But he added that preventing a more dangerous deterioration in the territory would require a presence “of many months.”

COOKS BREATHE a collective sigh of relief at the height of summer. All the luscious fruits and vegetables you’ve been craving for months are at their peak, and nobody wants or expects you to spend all day in the kitchen wrestling with them.
Nor do summer ingredients need it. This time of year, the best cooking is all about ease and simplicity, leaving you more time to enjoy the results of your (minimal) labor — preferably outside in the shade, sipping a cool drink.
To help you do just that, here is a guide to the techniques and ingredients you can turn to all summer long. Think of it as your tool kit. It will teach you how to grill pretty much everything. It will suggest flavor combinations that you can apply to everything from chilled blender soups to spiced nuts. And it will give you the freedom to create your own memorable dishes.
Just bear in mind that when it comes to summer cooking, less is more.
THE GRILL SHOULD BE YOUR GO-TO.
Preparing the Grill
First, the fundamentals, which you may know but which bear repeating: Learn to set up the grill in two ways, for cooking over direct heat and indirect heat, and you’ll have greater control over your food.
Direct heat is for cooking ingredients quickly right over the searing coals or gas burner. Use this method for small things that will cook through before they burn. Indirect heat is for ingredients that need slower cooking; build the fire under only half the grill (or turn on only half the burners) and cook over the empty side. If your grill has an upper rack, you can heat up the whole grill and place the meat on the upper rack (it’s far enough to count as indirect heat). For longer-cooking items, add more charcoal to the fire as it burns down. Do so with caution.
Whether you’re using direct or indirect heat, keep your eyes on the grill, moving things around as needed to speed up or slow down cooking. The edges of the grill are usually cooler than the center, so even if you’re using direct heat you can push burgers and such to the side if they start to burn.
Meat
Marinate meat (except for burgers and sausages) at least 1 hour and up to 24 hours ahead. Make sure the marinade has a little oil in it, and at least ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt per pound of meat (use a bit more for bone-in meat and a bit less for boneless meat). Everything else is up to you: garlic, herbs, spice rubs, aromatics, citrus juices, you get the idea.
Bring big, bone-in hunks that need long cooking (ribs, bone-in pork chops, whole chicken or bone-in parts, leg of lamb, rack of lamb, beef brisket, pork loin or butt) to room temperature before lighting the grill. This could take several hours for very large pieces. Prepare the grill for indirect heat, then cook over the empty side of the grill, covered, until done. Turn the meat several times and move it around the grill as needed. Big chunks of meat can take 2 to 7 hours, while smaller pieces (chicken parts) will be done in 30 to 45 minutes.
For boneless pieces (chicken cutlets and boneless thighs, steaks, skinny tenderloins, lamb chops, burgers and sausages), grill directly over the heat until charred on both sides. You can cover the grill to slow down the fire, or leave it uncovered to encourage the fire. If the exterior of your meat starts to burn before the center cooks through, move the meat to the side of the grill.
Skewers make it easier to turn smaller pieces. Soak wooden or bamboo skewers for 30 minutes, or use metal skewers. Thread on the meat; leave plenty of space in between pieces for more char, or squish them together for less char.

GAZA CITY — Maher al-Jarba, 2, one of the first casualties in the Gaza Strip when Israel resumed airstrikes after a six-hour pause on Tuesday, writhed in terror in an emergency-room bed as a nurse poked a needle into his hand. A blast had knocked the curly haired boy down 11 stone steps, fracturing his skull.
So his grandmother Wedad al-Jarba might have been angry that Hamas, the militant group that dominates the Gaza Strip, did not embrace the cease-fire proposed by Egypt, and kept firing rockets as Israel briefly held its fire. Instead, she shrugged. Like many Gazans interviewed, she said she longed for a deal — one that would change life in Gaza. But she doubted Egypt’s proposal would do that.

The friends concluded that Hamas could not commit to a cease-fire accord put forth without its participation and one that did not reflect Palestinian aspirations. “We have the right to defend ourselves against occupation,” said one, Radwan Abu Haseera, 36, a management professor.
Another, giving only a nickname, Abu Anas, 45, said he was surprised Hamas did not pause its attacks. Many Gazans oppose Hamas but are powerless against its arms, he said, and while differences are forgotten under Israeli fire, people want change and peace, even if it means compromise.
“The people here look steadfast,” he said, “but psychologically they are very tired.” His 2-year-old daughter, he said, “looks at the sky and thinks the clouds are smoke from rockets.”

Israel occupied Gaza during the 1967 Six-Day War and controls its borders, airspace and seas even now, nearly nine years after pulling out its settlers and troops. Since then, tough restrictions have effectively amounted to a blockade, reducing imports and exports to a trickle and preventing all but a few Gazans from leaving. Short but devastating wars deepen the misery.
Many Gazans say they are torn between desperately wanting an end to the current round of bombings, which have killed nearly 200 Palestinians here, including almost 40 children, and a growing conviction that they cannot return to the way things once were. Even Hamas’s many opponents here generally support its demands that Israel release prisoners, and along with Egypt, lift border restrictions that have gutted a weak economy.
“Everyone wants it to stop,” said Dr. Ayman al-Sahbani, the emergency room chief at Al-Shifa Hospital here. “Who would want to be bombed?”
Seeking to explain the Gazan problem, he listed the hospital supplies lacking because of import restrictions, even at Shifa, which at least could provide the CT scan that Maher needed that he could not get at another hospital closer to home. But then the doctor interrupted himself. The issue was not material goods, he said — it was freedoms most people take for granted.
Sometimes, he said, he thinks that Israel and the world simply do not understand what it is like for Gazans, by and large, to be unable to leave what many call an open-air prison.
“Do they not know, or is it that their people are people and ours are not?” he said, adding that he cannot go to medical conferences and his wife, a Ukrainian, has not gone home for years for fear she would not be allowed to return.

JERUSALEM — Egypt’s proposal for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas collapsed Tuesday only a few hours after the Israelis had accepted it, as Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a barrage of rockets and Israel resumed its airstrikes. The Israeli authorities said a Palestinian attack caused the first Israeli fatality in the eight-day-old military confrontation, in which Israeli bombings have killed nearly 200 Palestinians.
Israel announced at 9 a.m. Tuesday that it had accepted the Egyptian initiative unilaterally, but abandoned it after nearly 50 rockets were lobbed into Israel from Gaza in what was assumed to be a rejection by Hamas and its affiliates. Some Israeli politicians criticized the cease-fire plan, saying that not enough damage had yet been inflicted on Hamas’s infrastructure and weapons caches.
Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Israel Police, said the civilian was a 37-year-old man who had volunteered to distribute food parcels to Israeli soldiers near the crossing, and who was critically wounded by mortar fire around 7 p.m. The man, whom Mr. Rosenfeld declined to identify, died shortly after in an Ashkelon hospital.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel had said earlier that he would respond with force if the rockets did not stop.
“We agreed to the Egyptian proposal in order to give the opportunity to deal with demilitarization of the strip from missiles, rockets and tunnels through diplomatic means,” Mr. Netanyahu said after a meeting with the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “But if Hamas does not accept the cease-fire proposal, as it looks now, Israel will have all the international legitimacy in order to achieve the desired quiet.”
Leaders of Hamas did not officially respond to Israel’s acceptance of the Egyptian proposal, which was aimed at halting the aerial strikes that began on July 7 and called for Israeli and Palestinian delegations to travel to Cairo within 48 hours to negotiate further terms. Islamic Jihad said in a statement that the Egyptian proposal did not “meet the needs of our people and the conditions of the resistance, which was not consulted.”
Mousa Abu Marzouk, a Hamas leader based in Cairo, said in a message posted on Twitter around the time the rockets were flying that the organization was still “consulting” and had “not issued an official position on the Egyptian initiative.”
A Twitter post, in Hebrew, by Hamas’s military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, took responsibility for the rockets that were fired at Israeli cities on Tuesday, adding, “We will continue to bombard until our conditions are met.”

Uri Ariel, the housing minister who is in Mr. Bennett’s far-right party, called the decision “a strategic mistake akin to building a train without paving the last kilometer.” On Twitter, he cracked that previous Israeli operations in Gaza had led to quiet for three years and 18 months, while the latest calm lasted an hour — “impossible to say there is no progress.”
And Isaac Herzog, the head of Israel’s Labor Party and leader of the opposition in Parliament, said: “If the cease-fire doesn’t lead to forward movement in the peace process it is useless.”
Later Tuesday evening Mr. Netanyahu’s office announced that he had dismissed Danny Danon, his deputy defense minister, who has emerged as one of Mr. Netanyahu’s major critics over his handling of the Gaza crisis, describing it as a failure. “It is inconceivable that the deputy defense minister will attack the country’s leadership leading the campaign,” Mr. Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
Some analysts had said there were no downsides to Israel’s embrace of the cease-fire proposal: The Egyptian cease-fire would either lead to a genuine calm that benefits both sides or, if Hamas rejected the terms, provide Israel with cover to continue the conflict.
“If Hamas looks at the cards it has been dealt — and they are very weak cards indeed — resuming military operations against Israel is not a good hand to play,” Michael B. Oren, Israel’s former ambassador to the United States, told reporters on Tuesday in a conference call organized by The Israel Project, an advocacy group.
Speaking before Israel abandoned the cease-fire, Secretary of State John Kerry, who was expected to return to Washington on Tuesday afternoon from Vienna, where he had been trying to iron out a deal on Iran’s nuclear program, criticized Hamas for continuing to fire rockets after the cease-fire was to have taken effect.
“I cannot condemn strongly enough the actions of Hamas in so brazenly firing rockets, in multiple numbers, in the face of a good-will effort,” Mr. Kerry said at a news conference.
Mr. Kerry said that it was important for Hamas not to “play politics” by taking military actions to build up its standing in the Arab world, and he also criticized the group for putting civilians in danger by conducting its operations in civilian neighborhoods.

In 2012, when an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire ended eight days of cross-border violence, the deal was celebrated as a Hamas victory with street parades, but on Tuesday, Hamas supporters viewed Egypt’s proposed truce with suspicion. Outside the hospital, a Hamas security officer, who gave only a nickname, Abu Mahmoud, pointed at the rocket and said, “This is our celebration.”

The current hostilities, in which at least 185 Palestinians have been killed, are the third intense flare-up between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza in less than six years. They began more than two months after the spectacular collapse of American-brokered peace talks and a month after the swearing-in of a new Palestinian government that was based on a reconciliation pact with Hamas.
Tensions had been rising since the June 12 abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the occupied West Bank, which Israel blamed on Hamas, and the July 2 kidnapping and killing of a Palestinian 16-year-old in an apparent revenge attack by extremist Jews.
On Tuesday, hospital officials in Gaza said they had admitted a man wounded in an Israeli strike after the cease-fire was supposed to have started. He was admitted around noon, doctors said, and he said the explosion took place sometime after 11 a.m., although the Israeli military said it resumed its attacks only hours later; it was possible he was hit by an errant rocket fired from Gaza. “I heard there was a cease-fire,” he said, cringing as a doctor manipulated his leg. “I was fooled.” Still, Mr. Muhanna, asked if he still wanted a cease-fire to take hold, said, “Of course.”
Outside Shifa Hospital, which has treated many of the conflict’s worst casualties and become a focal point of mourning and defiance, several dozen people cheered as a rocket ripped skyward, leaving a white contrail.

JERUSALEM — They cruised around the Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem for hours in the dark of night, three Israeli Jews: a man of 29, who was driving, and two of his relatives, youths about 17. They were looking for a victim, preferably someone lightweight, who could easily be pushed into the car.
Though some of the details remain uncertain, at 3:48 a.m. on July 2, according to the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, the three relatives, now murder suspects who have yet to be identified, came across a slightly built Palestinian teenager who was alone: Muhammad Abu Khdeir, 16, who was waiting for his friends near the mosque on the main road of the well-to-do neighborhood of Shuafat, a few yards from his home.

After forcing Muhammad into the car, a Hyundai, they sped off to a forest near the western entrance to Jerusalem. Muhammad was dragged from the vehicle and the adult bludgeoned him on the head a number of times with a wrench. The adult then set Muhammad on fire with the help of one of his young relatives. Leaving Muhammad to die, the three fled.
Hours before Muhammad’s killing, Israel had buried the three teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, 19, and friends Gilad Shaar and Naftali Fraenkel, both 16, who had been abducted as they hitched a ride home from their yeshivas in the West Bank and were shot to death soon after. Their bodies were found in a field near Hebron after an 18-day search.
Bent on revenge for that and other attacks against Jews, according to details of the investigation into Muhammad’s death released on Monday by the Shin Bet, the three suspects planned the murder. They came equipped with handcuffs and gasoline.
The abduction and murder of the Israeli teenagers, the subsequent clampdown on Hamas in the West Bank and the revenge killing of Muhammad further poisoned the atmosphere between Israelis and Palestinians, driving tensions that spread to the Gaza border and grew into a full-blown confrontation. Over the past week more than 180 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and more than 1,000 rockets were fired from Gaza against Israel.
While the killings sent shockwaves around the world, they have also brought out the humanity in people on both sides of the conflict, with the victims’ families condemning the crimes and calling for the violence to stop.

Muhammad was not so fortunate. The fifth of seven children, three sons and four daughters, Muhammad was studying at a vocational school to be an electrician. His charred body was identified by means of DNA samples taken from his parents’ saliva.
Speaking to reporters soon after, his mother, Suha Abu Khdeir, recounted that he had been playing a computer game on a laptop with one of his brothers, then left the house at 3:30 a.m. to meet his friends for the dawn prayer that starts the daily fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Security cameras along the street captured the moments of his abduction. Youths ran to the house to tell Muhammad’s parents that he had been forced into the gray Hyundai. They called the police and tried to call Muhammad’s cellphone. It rang, but nobody answered
Muhammad was buried two days later in a tense funeral attended by thousands.
Eli Cohen, a police investigator, told Army Radio that the car seen in video of the abduction was later found parked outside the home of one of the suspects. On the night between July 5 and 6, seven suspects were arrested. Three convinced investigators that they had no role in the murder or in the attempted kidnapping the night before, and were released. Another was a relative who admitted to investigators that he had learned about the abduction and murder after the event.
Hearing about the developments in the case, Hassan Abu Khdeir, a representative of the family, said on Monday, “We do not trust the Israeli judicial system.” He said that human rights groups were collecting details and the family hoped to press the case in an international court.
The killing of Muhammad was widely condemned in Israel, despite the outrage over the kidnapping and killing of the three Israeli teenagers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that anyone found guilty would “face the full weight of the law.”
Rachel Fraenkel, the mother of Naftali Fraenkel, one of the Israeli teenagers kidnapped and murdered in the West Bank, spoke of her pain upon hearing about Muhammad’s death. Speaking to reporters outside her home after the shiva, the traditional seven-day Jewish mourning period, she said, “Even in the abyss of mourning for Gilad, Eyal and Naftali, it is difficult for me to describe how distressed we are by the outrage committed in Jerusalem — the shedding of innocent blood in defiance of all morality, of the Torah, of the foundation of the lives of our boys and of all of us in this country.”
The Israeli authorities have identified the two suspects in the murder of the three teenagers — two men from the Palestinian city of Hebron — but have not been able to find them.
Still, the killing of Muhammad has forced Israelis to confront the violent extremism that exists on the fringes of their society. A group of Israeli youth activists and residents who live near the forest where Muhammad’s burned body was found erected a makeshift stone monument there in his memory. It was later defaced, rebuilt and defaced again.
In the days after the killing of Muhammad, the Shin Bet said, the three main suspects tried to destroy the evidence. Among other things, an official of the agency said, they burned the clothes they wore that night.
The three suspects, the Shin Bet said, have since admitted abducting and killing Muhammad, whose death touched off protests and further inflamed tensions in Jerusalem and in the Palestinian territories. The Shin Bet and the police said the three had also re-enacted the attack for investigators.
